Each summer the Environmental Law Institute hosts a series of free lectures in Washington, DC, to provide an introduction to the legal foundations of environmental protection in the United States. Summer law clerks, interns, and others who would want to acquire a working knowledge of the basics are invited to attend. An experienced practitioner provides an overview of the history, main provisions, and essential vocabulary of each environmental statute.
This year, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of this successful series, ELI added an introductory seminar on the various career options available within the field of environmental law. The panel represented the spectrum of parties interested in environmental law and included Margaret Bowman (Director, Lenfest Ocean Program, and Program Officer, The Pew Charitable Trusts), Vivian Buckingham (Director, Public Interest Program, Environmental Law Institute), Richard Fox (Managing Attorney, Washington, DC office Earthjustice), Doug Nelson (President and General Counsel, CropLife America), Jim Rubin (Assistant Chief, Law and Policy Section, Environment and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice), and William Thomas (Counsel, Clifford Chance US LLP). Each panelist discussed his or her own work and other opportunities available in that sector.
