Staying on top of the legal and policy developments in the PFAS arena is no small task. As a special service to our members, the Environmental Law Institute provides a monthly series of webinars with co-authors of the PFAS Deskbook, James Pollack and Isabel Carey, and national experts on PFAS to keep you up to date, answer your questions, and highlight a unique topic related to PFAS during each session.

While regulators and impacted communities focus on removing PFAS from drinking water, water system managers must also now address PFAS in the nation’s wastewater streams. Wastewater systems have long sold biosolids synthesized from their waste streams as a fertilizer product. But reports of high PFAS levels in biosolids have led to statewide bans and restrictions on the land-application of biosolids, limiting the ability of wastewater managers to both generate revenue and efficiently manage their waste streams. More legal issues are emerging as well. States are now updating NPDES permits to require PFAS monitoring, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Information Collection Request to assess the need for future guidance and regulation, and litigation has started targeting PFAS contamination connected to publicly owned treatment works.

Join the Environmental Law Institute for a special edition of our Monthly PFAS Briefing series co-sponsored by ELI’s Women in Environmental Law and Leadership (WELL) initiative, focusing on how the wastewater industry is handling these challenges.
