Summary
Bottomland hardwood forests occur in about 49 million acres of land in the eastern United States. In the South, the bottomland forests are principally comprised of the oak-gum-cypress type, while the elm-ash-cottonwood type predominates in the North. Recent changes in land use patterns have drastically and adversely affected many of these forest types.
