Multifunctional Floodplain Management: Looking Ahead From the 2011 Mississippi Floods

In 2011, the Army Corps of Engineers opened Bird's Point New Madrid floodway in response to excessive flooding along the Mississippi River. The authors discuss how the activation of the floodway could provide an opportunity to discuss more comprehensive floodplain management, where floodplains are managed to provide a wider array of ecosystem services, rather than a limited subset.
