A Natural Solution to Algae Problems in Western Lake Erie

Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 17
Summary

The western basin of Lake Erie receives nutrient-laden waters from agricultural watersheds in
northwest Ohio, principally the Maumee River. The current landscape delivers highly enriched,
silt-laden waters by means of drainage tiles and ditches, which fuel the algae blooms that have
tainted the waters that millions depend on for drinking water and livelihood. Restoring the wetlands
of the Great Black Swamp will be an essential part of the effort to reduce harmful algae
blooms and cleaning up Lake Erie.
