Summary
The rural, and in some cases rugged, Tennessee River Valley has never been known as a mjor wetlands habitat. In fact, substantial wetlands were nonexistent when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created in the 1930s as an independent federal agency charged with developing the resources of the 41,000-square mile watershed.
